How to Make Your Home an Oasis

Home is a small word with a big job.

We spend so. much. time in our indoor spaces—cooking, eating, sleeping, relaxing, working, and *cough* the bedroom stuff. Often, our homes are places to escape the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

That means our homes aren’t just about the décor and furniture. They’re also about safety, security, harmony, and growth. They’re a place where we can be totally ourselves and enjoy it!

Your home should be an oasis—a sanctuary where you can find peace and calm whenever you need it. If that’s not how your home feels right now, It’s time to take it back, one step at a time!

11 Ways to Make Your Home an Oasis

Try these tips to make your home more calm, cool, and collected.

#1 Take advantage of natural light.

Natural light is the #1 way to calm your space. Natural sunlight has tons of health benefits, and it can also keep us calm and relaxed. So, don’t be shy! Open those curtains!

If your space isn’t blessed with enough natural light, you can fake it by adding more white accents to your home. It will help brighten the space by bouncing the little natural light around the room, making it seem brighter than it is!

#2 Get some houseplants.

Houseplants are great for the aesthetic, obviously. They’re fun to care for, make beautiful Instagram content, and add a little bit of spice to your interior design.

But they also have tons of well-researched benefits to our health:

  • Better sleep

  • Stronger immune system

  • Improved focus and productivity

  • Elevated mood

  • Increased wellbeing

  • Reduced stress

Take a trip to your local nursery and go wild! You can never have too many plants.

#3 Choose colors carefully.

Color has an emotional effect.

Brighter colors can give you a sense of lightness and a carefree calm. Darker hues bring a different kind of comfort, like being wrapped in the giant-est blanket burrito on earth. Choose colors that speak calm to you, whatever those may be!

One place to get started with color is in nature. We often find relaxation in Mama Earth’s rich browns and soft blues. Or, if you’re looking for more punch in your color choices, a forest green looks beautiful as an accent wall.

#4 Think wood on wood on wood.

Another way to channel nature’s calming vibes is to add more wood to your home.

Wood finishes and furnishings—hardwood flooring, exposed ceiling beams, handcrafted fixtures and furniture—bring the outdoors inside in a really obvious, powerful way. Even better is wood with exposed knots, grains, and subtle imperfections, just like those in nature.

#5 Get organic.

If you’re looking for a sustainable yet fashionable way to decorate, look no further than organic textiles.

By incorporating materials like cotton, wool, jute, rattan, and linen into your home décor, you bring a natural peace to your home. Think about upholstery, throw pillows, curtains, rugs, and other décor staples you can spruce up!

#6 Mix patterns sparingly.

Mixing patterns is a fun and easy way to decorate. But using too many patterns gives your brain too much to process at once.

Keep any mix-and-match patterns more unified, either by color or scale, to minimize your space's visual and mental clutter.

#7 Keep away the clutter!

Just like mixed patterns can be a lot for the brain to take in, so can a cluttered living space. Our living spaces and mental state are often linked. If our space is messy, our brains are, too!

Start with the entrance to your home. Walking into chaos begets more chaos. Having a clutter-free entryway to your home can put you in the right frame of mind every time you walk through the door.

#8 Add stone.

Stone recalls tranquil riverbeds or hot springs. It also evokes a certain sense of stability and endurance that we could all use a little more of.

Stone backsplashes or flooring selections can anchor a room. Or, if you’re looking for a little less commitment, vases, sculptures, and lamps are a great way to go!

#9 Display your “feel good” items.

Have any warm-and-fuzzy items locked away somewhere? Now’s the time to put them on display! Whether it’s an antique you love or your favorite family photo you keep meaning to hang up, displaying these precious items will bring a warm, comforting vibe to your home.

#10 Focus on the bedroom!

We spend over one-third of our lives sleeping. And the quality of sleep affects everything else we do in our day-to-day lives. So, why not start your reclaiming-home-as-oasis project in the bedroom!

Upgrade your sheets. Improve your pillow situation. Add some new art. Throw out your 15-year-old mattress. Whatever you need to do to get the best night’s sleep of your life, do it.

#11 Treat your other senses.

When creating a home oasis, paying attention to all your senses is essential. Try adding a few super-soft or interestingly textured blankets or pillows to your living room. Browse the candle section at TJ Maxx and add aromatherapy to your oasis. When you sleep, consider a white noise machine.

Paying attention to all your senses will make your house the ultimate home.
