Neighborhood Spotlight: West Wash Park

This week’s Dwell Denver Neighborhood Spotlight focuses on one of Denver’s most sought-after neighborhoods…West Wash Park (as it’s colloquially known).  This tiny neighborhood, only .82 square miles to be exact, packs a lot into its tight boundaries.

Whether you’re a city dweller searching for a new date-night spot, or a Sunday volleyball player looking for a new place to fuel up and wind down after summer games, this residential haven offers many fun ways to recharge your routine. Minutes from downtown, urban conveniences mixed with historic charm make this community an appealing neighborhood to call home.

Boundaries:

North: Alameda Ave.
East: Downing/Washington Park
South: Mississippi Ave.
West: Broadway

Neighborhood Anchor:

Washington Park to the east of West Wash Park provides the greatest appeal to this primarily residential neighborhood. Because there’s not really the main drag, residents get to enjoy all of the hotspots sprinkled throughout the neighborhood.  We would bet that many of the residents consider the Whole Foods on S. Washington to be the neighborhood anchor.

Recreation:

Local spots where residents—mostly 20- and 30-something renters, young families, and homeowners—hang (think dive bars like The Kentucky InnCandlelight TavernFinley’s Pub, and Wash Perk for coffee); foodies visiting the hood’s rich and varied selection of eateries (BittersweetPete’s Central OneFontana SushiBlackbirdLarkburger); joggers finishing their loop at the adjacent Wash Park (or taking a class at Pearl Street Fitnessor Denver Kung Fu) provide the urban, yet neighborhood-y vibe of West Wash Park.

Commuting:

Get around on a bus, bike, ride-share, Lime/Bird scooter or on foot.  West Wash Park’s central location provides easy access to Alameda Ave., Broadway and I-25. It is also close to the Alameda Station light rail stop and the Cherry Creek Trail.

Architectural Influence:

Very diverse architectural styles ranging from Victorian homes alongside charming bungalows, Dutch Colonials, Denver Squares, newly remodeled/built duplexes and modern condo complexes can be found in West Wash Park.

Why We Like West Wash Park:

West Wash Park is heavily residential, filled with early-20th-century houses that have been turned into multi-unit rentals, and offers easy access to a variety of essential and just-for-fun amenities such as grocery stores and fitness clubs, and watering holes and music venues.
