Neighborhood Spotlight: LoHi

Slo Hi Coffee Co in the Sloan’s Lake neighborhood of Denver

This week’s Dwell Denver Neighborhood Spotlight focuses on one of Denver’s most sought-after neighborhoods…LoHi.  Lower Highland (or LoHi, for short) wasn’t given its nickname until the early 2000’s when the developers of the Olinger property at W. 30th Ave. and 16th St. and Boulder St. needed a moniker that would distinguish the neighborhood from Highland, which lies to the north.  Since then, LoHi has made many a nation-wide MOST AWESOME NEIGHBORHOOD list.  The popularity of this neighborhood has skyrocketed since the development of the Olinger property and is now a destination spot for the entire city.

Boundaries:

North: W. 38th Ave.
East: I-25
South: Speer Blvd.
West: Zuni St.

Neighborhood Anchor:

Dwell Denver Real Estate is located at 30th and Wyandot St. Obviously, we consider this to be OUR main anchor…but that’s just us. Everyone who has ventured into LoHi will agree that the neighborhood anchor is the giant silver milk can at 16th St. and Boulder, known as Little Man Ice Cream.  Although there are several pockets of restaurants, shops, and bars, the milk can is where the action happens.

Recreation:

The Navajo Street Art DistrictAvanti F&B, 32nd and Zuni (home to Jeweliusduo RestaurantTony P’s Bar and PizzeriaVaVaBloomWooden Spoon Cafe and BakerySymmetry Massage, Central St. boast the highest concentration of amenities, besides the redeveloped Olinger property.  Check this out, a full list of restaurants in LoHi, courtesy of 5280 magazine and Eater.com.

Commuting:

Get around on a bus, bike, ride-share, Lime/Bird scooter or on foot.  LoHi’s central location provides easy access to all major highways, Speer Blvd., and the RTD light rail.

Architectural Influence:

Very diverse architectural styles ranging from Victorian homes alongside charming bungalows, newly remodeled duplexes and modern condo complexes are represented in LoHi.  It’s a hotbed for redevelopment so more and more modern condo, apartment, and loft projects are going in every day.

Why We Like LoHi:

Well, we like it so much we chose to move to this neighborhood in 2014.  We love that we have access to the amenities of the neighborhood, but what we love the most is the historic feel and charm.  The access to Downtown via the walking bridges is spectacular. Everything we need, from grocery stores to Target, is right out our front door with a few minute’s walk and love that we could live in this neighborhood without a car if we didn’t need to drive buyers and sellers around.
