Neighborhood Spotlight: Downtown Denver

The 16th STreet Mall in Downtown Denver

This week’s Dwell Denver Neighborhood Spotlight shines on one of our most historic, core Denver neighborhoods: Downtown Denver. This neighborhood contains the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Convention Center, and the 16th Street Mall.

The area is zoned as a Historic District. It was, originally, a place for Native Americans that often settled near the banks of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. Then the gold rush birthed the growth that continues today.  It is considered one of the best-preserved historic downtown areas in the US. Stunning historic buildings still stand proud, but ever-more in the shadows of post-modern skyscrapers.

Boundaries:

North West: Lawrence Street
North East: 20th Ave.
East: BroadwaySouth:  Colfax Ave.
South West: Speer Blvd.

Neighborhood Anchor:

The 16th Street Mall is, likely, the most “anchoring” element. Its free shuttle service and arterial flow connect all of downtown Denver.

Recreation:

The Theater District is a huge draw for theater-lovers, The Denver Pavilions provides the predictable-yet-comforting standard shop fare/movie theater/chain restaurants, as does The 16th Street Mall, with standbys such as The Hard Rock CafeLa Loma Mexican Kitchen is a newer favorite, and Ship TavernEllyngton’s, and Palace Arms offer elegant dining in the historic Brown Palace Hotel. The entire 16th Street Mall is filled with local boutiques and national chain shops and restaurants down the entire length.

Commuting:

Great for walking, but one of the most accessible neighborhoods in Denver. Use the free shuttle down 16th Street Mall, take a Lyft/Uber, or rent one of the many electric scooters on nearly every block.

Architectural Influence:

Historic, turn-of-the-century commercial buildings-turned condos, a few 1960s-era high-rise condos, and several post-modern skyscrapers (many under construction now) are all you’ll find in this area.

Why We Like Downtown Denver:

We love the vibrancy that makes Downtown Denver feel like a larger city than it really is (although it’s getting there). The sense of history walking through the streets, along with the crowds of residents, tourists, employees, and conventioneers give this neighborhood an energy that is exciting to experience!

If you have any questions about this neighborhood, or if you're ready to go see some homes there, we're here for you!  It's time to sell your home for top dollar and/or invest in the home you want and the life you dream about.

At Dwell Denver, we make real estate really simple so you'll feel confident and in control every step of the way.
