Neighborhood Spotlight: Encino, NM

This week’s Dwell Denver Neighborhood Spotlight takes us on a little field trip. We traveled through central New Mexico a couple of years ago and stopped to marvel at the abandoned-ness of a small railroad village called Encino (population 94 according to the 2000 census). See, Heather and I love abandoned places. The more decrepit, the better! We love marveling at old buildings, falling down or in different phases of decline, and wondering what they were like in their heyday.

As we drove through Encino on Hwy 60, which didn’t take long…they don’t even have a stop light…we were taken with how vibrant the little town must have been.  Church potlucks, one-room schoolhouse, everyone knowing everyone and thought about how charming that way of life must have been.  Then over the years, the railroad didn’t stop anymore, the kids moved away for school or to start their families in bigger cities and the town slowly went away.

Then we had an idea!  A fool-proof investment strategy…let’s buy Encino and bring it back to life!  As of now, there is exactly one house listed on the MLS and it’s a steal.  Who’s with us? Let’s make Encino amazing again!
