A Quick History of Mayfair

After World War II, Denver experienced a significant housing boom. Veterans and their families flocked to the city thanks to their VA loans and other benefits.

Local builders were happy to oblige their new residents, producing predominantly ranch-style homes throughout the 1940s and 50s. As the neighborhood began to fill and change, larger homes became the talk of the town.

Today, you’ll find a veritable slide-rule of structures, from Tudor and neo-eclectic mansions to the classics like ranches, bungalows, and high-rise apartment buildings.

7 Reasons to Love Mayfair

#1 Mayfair Park

At the center of the neighborhood sits Mayfair Park—the community’s jewel. It features great green patches in addition to a large playground, basketball court, and biking paths.

The park also has some interesting historic details! On the far north edge of the park, there’s a small gravel trail. This Smoky Hills North Trail was used in the early 1800s as settlers from the east first traveled to Denver. You’ll find signs along the trail that give a brief glimpse into the world of those travelers and the Indigenous people they encountered.

One Yelp reviewer said:

Great community park! Mayfair offers a ton of green space for you or the pups, a fun playground, picnic areas, portable bathroom facility, and a paved trail around the whole thing. What makes this park stand out is the small bit of "preserved" Smoky Hill Trail and four signs that provide details and history of life on the trail, the effect on Native Americans, and a look at the local environment then and now. What a great surprise, and one reason I love Denver's amazing park system!

#2 Walkability

The southern half of the neighborhood is known for its mature trees lining wide sidewalks, perfect for an afternoon stroll. And while the northern sidewalks are a tad thinner and closer to the street, you’ll have no problem walking (or biking) around this beautiful neighborhood!

#3 Peace and Quiet

Mayfair boasts a markedly quieter atmosphere than the rest of Denver, and residents love it. This relaxing neighborhood feels worlds away from the hustle-and-bustle while being close to all the necessary amenities of Downtown and beyond.

#4 International Eats on Colfax Avenue

There’s no shortage of culinary masterpieces in Mayfair thanks to the delicious eats near Colfax Avenue.

Take a mouth tour of Ethiopia with Axum Restaurant. Here you can get breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, homemade Ethiopian wine included!

Or, if you’re looking to go south of the border, try Los Parceros! This Columbian restaurant has been open since 2013 and boasts a family-friendly, cozy atmosphere. From authentic bandeja paisa to gluten-free and vegetarian twists on the classics, everyone leaves with a full and happy belly.

#5 Mayfair Neighbors, Inc.

This neighborhood organization is the cream of the crop. In addition to the regular-shmegular neighborhood association activities like development and traffic enforcement, Mayfair Neighbors puts on plenty of community events throughout the year. These include fan favorites like an Easter egg hunt, Fourth of July bike parade, and a gigantic concert in Mayfair Park! They also curate content for and publish their own local magazine, The Mayfair Mirror, several times a year.

#6 The Seasoned Chef

Foodies unite! The Seasoned Chef is a true neighborhood treat. Their vision is to “successfully share our collective knowledge” of food by hosting public cooking classes for home and recreational cooks! They offer classes—in-person, online, and private—for ages 11 and older. Past classes include crepes and cocktails, modern Italian, Spanish tapas, and classic Vietnamese cooking! Yum!

#7 The Art Gym Denver

The Art Gym, an alternative to private art studio rental, is a “shared workspace [that] keeps costs low and puts artists in a creative environment where others are making art in a variety of disciplines.”

And for the art-lovers (not art-doers) there are plenty of events throughout the year where you can flex your creative muscles. From gallery openings to artist talks and critiques to demos with all sorts of cool mediums (here’s looking at you, metalsmithing!) you’re going to love this ultra-creative space!
